This type of acid is also used as an acne treatment, when mixed with other chemicals. It helps to remove the top layer of skin and reveals newer skin below the layer of skin most prone to acne. This newer skin is also less oily, and thus less likely to form acne. Glycolic acid is also used in chemical peels, where the skin is scrubbed in an effort to break apart the dead or dry skin. When used as a chemical peel, the concentration of the acid can go up to 70%. In both cases, a sunscreen should be used after the glycolic acid is applied. Though most skin peels are done in the office of a dermatologist by a professional, some can be performed at home; this includes the glycolic acid peel.
